Bridging Cultural Gaps Through the Power of Music
Dueling Tango Duos is a bilingual, bicultural concert that explores the mystery and passion of tango music with non-Spanish speaking audiences through the interpretation of songs, dance, and a bit of playful humor. It began as a project to understand the lyricism of tango and its rich cultural obsession, but it has opened people’s hearts to so much more. By translating this beautiful genre of music into English and sharing it with diverse audiences, we help illustrate that, regardless of our cultural and linguistic differences, we are all still worried about the same themes and singing about love in the same way. This kind of cross-cultural understanding brings us together as people and gives us compassion for those who are different from ourselves.
“I believe deeply in the power of art and music to bring people together across cultural divides. Your show demonstrated that last night. It wasn’t just a fun and sometimes breathtakingly brilliant performance. The audience opened its collective heart to your Argentinian colleagues and I’m sure they could feel it. That’s the kind of peacemaking, cultural crossing, community building no amount of political negotiation can accomplish.”
-Carlotta Collette, Oregon Metro Regional Government Councilor
The Dueling Tango Duos Show
Dueling Tango Duos features traditional Argentine tangos translated, arranged, and performed in both English and Spanish in a playful exchange or “duel” of lyricism and harmony. The audience is given a bilingual program with lyrics so they can follow along as we guide them through each song. Along with history, humor, and a professional dance piece, this show promises a well-rounded theatrical performance in which spectators experience a wide array of emotions from joy to nostalgia, tenderness to intensity, and — ideally — the desire to learn Spanish or to dance the tango.
